Ingredients
-
2 ½ cups bread flour
-
3 tbsp sugar
-
1 tsp salt
-
2 tsp instant yeast
-
1 large egg
-
½ cup warm milk
-
¼ cup heavy cream
-
2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
-
1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
-
Make the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine bread flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Add the egg, warm milk, cream, and vanilla. Mix until a dough forms. -
Knead & Add Butter
Knead for 10 minutes until smooth. Add butter and knead until fully incorporated and elastic. -
First Rise
Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size. -
Shape the Dough
Punch down, divide the dough into equal portions, shape as desired (e.g. slashed oval), and place into a greased pan.
-
Second Rise & Bake
Let rise for 30 minutes. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25–30 minutes until golden brown. Cool before slicing.
Notes
-
For an even softer crumb, replace part of the milk with tangzhong (flour-water paste).
-
Brush with melted butter after baking for a shiny, tender crust.
-
Add a dusting of powdered sugar or a vanilla glaze for a sweeter finish.
