Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups bread flour

  • 3 tbsp sugar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 tsp instant yeast

  • 1 large egg

  • ½ cup warm milk

  • ¼ cup heavy cream

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Make the Dough
    In a large mixing bowl, combine bread flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Add the egg, warm milk, cream, and vanilla. Mix until a dough forms.

  • Knead & Add Butter
    Knead for 10 minutes until smooth. Add butter and knead until fully incorporated and elastic.

  • First Rise
    Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  • Shape the Dough
    Punch down, divide the dough into equal portions, shape as desired (e.g. slashed oval), and place into a greased pan.

 

  • Second Rise & Bake
    Let rise for 30 minutes. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25–30 minutes until golden brown. Cool before slicing.

Notes

  • For an even softer crumb, replace part of the milk with tangzhong (flour-water paste).

  • Brush with melted butter after baking for a shiny, tender crust.

 

  • Add a dusting of powdered sugar or a vanilla glaze for a sweeter finish.
